LPGA expected to award Solheim Cup to Iowa course

Iowans are preparing for the LPGA to announce on Monday that the Solheim Cup will be played at Des Moines Golf and Country Club in 2017.

The LPGA has scheduled a news conference at the club on Monday at 11 a.m. local time (noon ET). Tour commissioner Mike Whan will be there to make the announcement.

While LPGA and Des Moines Golf and Country Club officials are not commenting yet, the club has been in serious talks with the women’s tour for several months about being the next U.S. location for the biennial competition between the United States and Europe. The Europeans won the event at Colorado Golf Club last month. The 2015 Solheim Cup is scheduled to be played in Germany at the St. Leon-Rot club outside Frankfurt.

Des Moines Golf and Country Club’s North Course, a Pete Dye design, was host to the U.S. Senior Open in 1999. Dave Eichelberger won with a reported 250,000 fans turning out for the week.
